Well-written review of Stratford Shakespeare Festival's production of "The Trojan Women"

Posted: 07 Jun 2008 09:56 PM CDT

I'm not a big fan of live stage productions, but Noah Millman has written an excellent review of Stratford Shakespeare Festival's production of "The Trojan Women." Here's a taste:
The play is set after the fall of Troy. Hector is dead. Priam is dead. Paris is dead. The city is sacked and the women wait in tents outside the walls for their new masters to parcel them out amongst themselves as slaves. Before meeting the women, we open with Poseidon's impotent fury at the loss of his city, and his surprise at Athena's sudden reversal of sympathy and determination to visit revenge upon the Greeks whom she had only just led to triumph. These gods depart, and we are left with the women. Hecuba, Queen of Troy, stirs to bemoan her fate – no sons, no husband, no city – and learns soon enough that so long as she can say "this is the worst" the worst is yet to come.

It's not the way one normally chooses to spend an evening, listening to the lamentation of women. Conan accounted it the greatest delight, but he spoke specifically of the lamentation of women whose husbands he had slain, and anyhow he was a barbarian.

Seattle to ban beach bonfires in effort to fight global warming

Posted: 07 Jun 2008 09:34 PM CDT

According to a memo to the park board from the staff released Thursday, "The overall policy question for the Board is whether it is good policy for Seattle Parks to continue public beach fires when the carbon ... emissions produced by thousands of beach fires per year contributes to global warming."

Tips for surviving if you happened to be transported back to 1000 AD

Posted: 07 Jun 2008 02:17 PM CDT

Here's the question:
I wanted to ask for survival tips in case I am unexpectedly transported to a random location in Europe (say for instance current France/Benelux/Germany) in the year 1000 AD (plus or minus 200 years). I assume that such transportation would leave me with what I am wearing, what I know, and nothing else. Any advice would help.

Interesting discussion here. This would be a great assignment spread across every class in junior high/high school.

The character of John Constantine was created because the artists wanted to draw Sting

Posted: 07 Jun 2008 02:06 PM CDT

Alan Moore, speaking about Steve Bissette and John Totleben:
One of those early notes was they both wanted to do a character that looked like Sting. I think DC is terrified that Sting will sue them, although Sting has seen the character and commented in Rolling Stone that he thought it was great. He was very flattered to have a comic character who looked like him, but DC gets nervous about these things. They started to eradicate all traces of references in the introduction of the early Swamp Thing books to John Constantine's resemblance to Sting . But I can state categorically that the character only existed because Steve and John wanted to do a character that looked like Sting.
