Fox News names Radiohead's "The King of Limbs" as the #1 album of 2k11

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 04:32 PM PST

Fox News is a popular conservative TV channel for people who want 2 interpet the world with a a conservative-wave vibe. I usually don't even care abt politics, because 'right vs. left' is less important 2 me than the 'mainstream vs alt' chicken-or-egg type of argument that might never end. However, I saw this video where some talking head bro on Fox News calls Radioheads The King of Limbs the #1 album of 2k11. It is kinda weird 2 know that Radiohead is officially a 'conservative/right-wing rock band', but I guess they decided it was a better idea to sell their albums in WalMart instead of giving them away 4 free.

Some talking head bro calls the album "The great post-dubstep ambient soul record that the world has been waiting for." I guess he really knows what he is talking abt. Feel like maybe Pitchfork should 'give him an internship' or something.

Do these bros seem like they are trying 2 do some zany satire on the state of indie music, or is this bro truly passionate abt Radiohead? Do u think he likes to unwind by doing mad drugs and watching his lava lamp vibe out while he listens to The 'head?

Is 'GAME OVER' the new 'crushed it'?

Will Piers Morgan 'save CNN'?
Is Fox News more alt than CNN?
Is Radiohead's "King of Limbs" the #1 album of 2k11?
Is it the #1 album of the decade?
Is it the #1 album of the century?
Is it Radiohead's worst album?
Who do yall think is Fox News's top 10 albums of 2k10/2k11? [via overground tastes]

Chromeo performs on Conan. Have they had a successful career?

I just watched Chromeo performing on Conan, but I don't even really have an opinion on the performance at all. Sorta past the point of even 'caring' abt indie bands on late night television shows. Chromeo seems alright. Don't really listen to them much, but I guess they are 'good at music', even though I can't really tell the difference between their oldest songs and their newest songs.

Sorta wonder if we 'hold it against them' for being consistently good, but maybe that's their fault, because in modern indie, u have to pull out as many new gimmicks + drama as possible 2 keep ppl interested in u. I wonder if Conan listens 2 Chromeo, or if he thinks they are 'just another dumb indie band' that he zoned out during.

Do yall <3 Chromeo?
Can they 'make the leap' and 'go mainstream' on their 5th album?
Is A-Trak more successful than his brother?
Do ppl h8 Chromeo because they are 'ethnic' but 'not black'?
If Chromeo was 'black', would the indiesphere like them more?
Is Conan O'Brien 'more alt' than Jimmy Fallon?

Mainstream Harry Potter actress Emma Watson spotted canoodling with rapegaze hipster bro

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 12:26 PM PST

I just saw this picture of Emma Watson 'canoodling' with some bro. My first response was 'he's totally ugly, why would she be with him when she could d8 a totally prime piece of 20something a$$.' But then I took a closer look at the bro.

Pasty skin.
Greasy Hair
See-thru black mesh shirt.
Signs of heavy drug use.

It seems like he is just a bro who just likes to party hard, rapegaze style. I can't confirm nor deny that he rides the needle drug waves, but wouldn't put it past him.

U gotta give him props 4 staying true 2 his personal brand AND bagging a mainstream, rich actress who will support his drug habit while he tries to craft an album that merges dubstep with rapegaze.

Is this the same bro that she was spotted canoodling with at Glastonbury Festival? [link]

Is Rapegaze going mainstream?
Do u have a rapegaze personal brand?
Is 'rapegaze' the modern 'goth'?
Is rapegaze a lifestyle or a way of life?
Is Harry Potter 'rolling over in his grave'?
Is Emma Watson going 2 be one of those serious actresses who gets naked every 4 years to 'keep ppl interested in her'/taking her seriously?

Have u ever dated a rapegaze bro/broad?

James Franco's little brother tries 2 jumpstart his career by starring in the video 4 Cults "Go Outside"

Here is the new video for Cults' hit 2k10 fuzzy buzzy anthem "Go Outside." The song is like 100 blog years old at this point, but it's chill that they are 'being brought 2 market' with an MTV debut and didn't fall in2 the trap of releasing one of those forgettable 'lofi' videos shot on a vintage camera. This video is probably 200% more buzzworthy because James Franco's little brother "Dave Franco" plays the hornie bro in the video.

Anyways, the video is pretty 1990s. Dude is watching some hot skank on TV, she comes out of the TV, they go on a d8, then some Mexican beats up Davie Franco. Then they come back home and she goes back in2 the tv. Must represent something that totally goes ovr my head.

Some girl named Emma Roberts is also in the video. I think she is like a romantic comedy post-tween actress. Get a clue, bitches!

Is Cults going 2 'save' 2k11?
Will Cults replace Best Coast as the #1 most alt-famousest fuzzy buzzy buzzband?
Is Cults abt 2 'go mainstream', reaching tons of NPR-wave cool dad overgrounders?
Will Cults' new album be 'critically acclaimed' or will many consider them a 'buzz hit wonder' because of the strength of the fuzzbuzz anthem "Go Outside"?
Do u think they shoulda got the real James Franco 2 star in and direct the video 2 get more meme mileage out of it?

Will Dave Franco ever get out of his big brother's shadow?

INFOGRAPHIC: Album Sales are going down the shitter

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 06:53 AM PST

Did yall know that 'the music industry' is 'going down the shitter'? Ya. Obvi. It doesn't really matter 2 me because most of the bands I listen 2 are just lofi buzzbands that know their shit is gonna get leaked or else they won't have any fans/buzz. Anyways, here is some graph that shows album sales from 1973-2010. "What an alarming trend!" [via graphical analysis]

Sorta wish I coulda been a buzzband from 1993-2000. Even if we were a 'one hit wonder', we probably still woulda made more bank than we would have made now. Would yall rather be a 'crappy alt rock band who had a hit that sold 3 million albums' or a modern buzzband getting 'tons of buzz'?

Good news though, yall. Here is a graph of 'singles' sales. As yall can see, the 'digital single' is selling 'like hot cakes.'

"Vinyl is totally back, yall!" -some indie cool dad

I guess it's a good thing that we can buy mp3s 'a la carte' instead of having to go 2 Blockbuster Music/Sam Goody/Suncoast 2 purchase an $18.99 CD full of crappy songs.

Have digital singles 'ruined' the music industry?
R u sad abt 'the death of the album' or is it a good thing 4 consumers?
R u sad that the music industry is 'dying'?
Would yall rather be a modern indie buzzband or get a standard 9-5 job?
Do consumers on the internet have more power than evr b4?
Do yall miss the 1990s?
Do yall h8 product placement/co-branding as the final attempt 2 'monetize' music?
Do u think tweens with iTunes gift cards 'fuel' the music industry?

Jamie XX goes solo 2 concentrate on dubstep career, only receives a 7.8 from Pitchfork

Posted: 22 Feb 2011 06:37 AM PST

Recently, Jamie XX of the popular 2k9 buzzband The XX 'went solo' and released an album with some dude named Gil Scott-Heron. Apparently, Jamie XX is 'hellbent' on proving that he is an authentic dubstep DJ/producer. His newest album 'We're Not Here' got a 7.8 Pitchfork. Unfortunately, The xx's self-titled release got an 8.7, so this probably represents a 'step backwards' 4 his career, and he should probably make more music where 2 people sing seductively over his tunes.

Here is a paragraph where they say that Jamie XX is the #1 pad tapping drummer in the world right now.

Jamie Smith, percussionist and producer of the xx, has become a minor celebrity of the post-dubstep Brixton scene, earning a reputation as a DJ with his MPC mastery and as an ace remixer, crafting memorable, expansive edits of songs by Adele and Glasser in recent months. Smith, like many liners-scanning millennial sound nerds, is a massive Scott-Heron fan, and at Russell's suggestion has taken a stab at recontextualizing I'm New Here in service of changing sounds-- you can practically hear him cycling through subgenres track-to-track.

It's too dangerous to question either the necessity or the motivation behind such a project-- 22-year-old wunderkind cinches cred with resurgent iconoclast, perhaps?-- but it will come up.

I don't really 'get' dubstep, so I can't offer much analysis, but it seems like a 'hot trend' that the UK is trying to 'trick' Americans in2 thinking is relevant. Do yall <3 Dubstep?

Apparently Jamie XX doesn't think that this is a solo album because that other dude's name is on it. Wish he just understood that according 2 the buzzosphere, this is his album, and he 'went solo', abandoning the other members of the XX. Now it might be time 2 'crawl back in2 the dog house' and ask 4 forgiveness...

Is Jamie XX ur fave dubsteppin DJ?

Did this album 'crush it' in dubsteppy ways?
Do u think Jamie XX has 'failed' as a solo artist?
Is Jamie XX the most talented member of the XX?
Does P4k <3 or h8 dubstep?
Do u ever wish America didn't import UK sounds/trends/'movements'?
WTF is 'dubstep'?

Hey yall,

I feel like after the Arcade Fire won the Grammy 4 'Best Rock Band', indie has finally gone mainstream. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between what is alt, what is mainstream, what 'music fans' care abt. Do ppl 'want to be entertained' by their fave blog? Do they visit a blog because of what it 'covers' or because of 'what it doesn't cover'?

I feel confused. I wonder if HIPSTER RUNOFF as it exists has 'peaked.' It seems like it might be time to 'start a new journey.' Start my final journey in2 the Mainstream. HIPSTER RUNOFF PRESENTS THE MAINSTREAMER.

Here are some questions that ppl have asked Carles:

Who writes the Mainstreamer?
Like the Alt Report Robot writes the ALT REPORT, I have hired some1 called tHe uLtiMaTe LaMeStReAmEr 2 write all of the Mainstreamer posts.

Thanks for finally doing this. The Alt Report was getting really tweeny and lamestream.
Sorry bro. My bad.

Is it true that Carles will retire from blogging at the end of 2k11?
Yes and no. The truth is, blogging might be done with Carles.

Why have u ruined HRO with the new layout?
Cuz HRO 3.0 is all about the future of the web, and moving 'beyond the blog.' I'm not sure what that means, but I read abt it after some other blogspot redesigned.

Why Comic Sans?
Cuz it looks kewl <3.

What inspired u 2 start the Mainstreamer?
I feel like indie music is abt to die, so I really need to 'diversify' before I go down with the ship.

What bands will u cover on the Mainstreamer?
Slutwave, tween pop, rock n roll via WalMart, hip hop rap by African American AND white ppl [via Eminems]. Just the kewl shit like Kings of Leons, Lenny Kravitz, Radiohead, Kanye West, Larry Gaga, Kitty Perrie, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey & the Nick Cannons, Little Wayne, Romeo, and BowWow... The usual... Nickelback... Puddle of Mudd, Hinder, every1 playing Brochella. Mark McGrath and the Sugar Rays. Fred Durst. Please feel free 2 let me know who should be covered.

R u just going after 'EZ hits' from mainstream content?
No. This is a passion project. 'I am passionate about pop culture, the blogosphere, and social media.' -some1 applying for a job on the internet
