The Art of the Sympathy Meme: Going from Homeless 2 Viral

I was driving around in suburbia the other day, and I happened to see a homeless man holding up an interesting sign. Like many other homeless people, I assumed he was crazy, smelly, a drug addict, an alcoholic, infested with sexually transmitted diseases, and pulling the gimmick where he claims that he 'served his country' [via wearing a camouflage jacket]. His sign claimed that he had a 'golden radio voice', so I offered him a Taco Bell taco in exchange for a few lines. He delivered. I took out my camera and asked him to re-create the process and I would give him the change sitting in my cup holder. He willingly obliged.

I pulled over and interviewed him. I was feeling 'creative', and knew that his voice was bloggable enough to 'go viral' if I 'humanized him' enough. Worst case scenario--I gave a homeless guy 94 cents and a taco. Best case scenario--he would go viral, and I would change his life forever.

The truth is most people who are 'successful' in a middle class way feel a little bit guilty that they have more than others. Usually, they can find some sort of release by 'going to church' or maybe 'dropping off some old clothes / canned goods at a local donation station', but in the modern world, you don't have to 'share' anything more than a hyperlink/video embed.

What if I told u that I had a solution 2 end homelessness?
Let's help homeless people go viral.

Just a few days ago, Ted Williams was a 'drain' on our fragile society. Today, he is 'bringing joy' 2 the lives' of Middle American lamestreamers, after giving every1 'hope' that no matter how 'down on ur luck' u r, u can still become a viral meme. U don't have to have a Macbook, webcam, knowledge of topical content, or even a sober lifestyle. All u need is a dream.

</embed>

I have a mainstream job and I will never get to meet Al Roker or Ann Curry or Matt Lauer or the Ghost of Katie Couric.

</embed>

The reviews on Ted Williams have been 'mixed.'
White woman: "He's so eloquent for a homeless man."
White Christian: "He doesn't seem like most homeless ppl who I serve slop 2 @the_shelter."
White kid: "Are all homeless ppl hiding hidden talents?"
White racist: "Affirmative action has gone 2 far."
Other homeless man: "What's youtube?"

Seems like every major network 'wanted a piece of him.' Wanted to showcase him as an 'inspirational story' from 'the web' that they were featuring in order to appeal 2 young and old ppl.

</embed>

Pulling off the 'major network trifecta' [via ABC, NBC, CBS]. The ultimate modern human interest story. A modern 'rags 2 riches story.' The story of a man who went from 'disconnected' 2 'totally viral.'

</embed>

So many job offers flowing in to Ted Williams. National news networks. Even the Cleveland Cavaliers saw him as a marketable enough meme to 'offer him a job.'

Wonder if it is a good idea to hire a former drug + alcohol addict who is probably 'completely out of touch with the world' 2 join ur workforce. Wonder if employees will welcome him with open arms or if they will be like "I should have been a homeless addict 4 the first 50 years of my life, searching for an opportunity 2 go viral, then have the internet take care of me.'

I heard Ted Willies has had 'many run ins with the law.'

'I heard Ted Willies has 9 kids and used to bone Oprah.'

'I heard Ted Willies is always down to 'relapse' and vibe out on some black tar heroin.'

"Let's dig up his mom who he hasn't talked to in 10 years just to add another character sculpting tool 2 the story. She is probably a good mom [via letting her son spend 10 years living on the streets as a drug addict]."

</embed>

I feel like a better person
now that I have 'shared' Ted Williams with u
I want u 2 know
that now matter how 'rock bottom' u hit

U always have the chance 2 'go viral'
U always have the chance to 'make mad bank'
U always have the chance 2 inspire
Nvr give up
Nvr effing give up

Because 1 month u can be on a crack bender where ur 'sucking penis in a bathroom 4 money'
and the next week
ur mouth can be delivering positive vibes
on a radio station.

Crack, Cocaine, Prostitution
Weed, Heroin, miscellaneous dark acts
U can rebound
There is hope for 20something.

One sign
One hope
One human meme
One story of hope
2 help boring, middle class ppl feel like they 'saved some1's life' just by 'sharing a link 2 an inspirational story.'

Did the story of Ted Williams 'inspire u'?
Do u want to try to help a homeless man 'go viral' 2 save his life?
Do u have any ideas 2 help homeless people 'go viral' beyond the 'traditional puff piece'?
Does Ted Williams have 'a good voice' or is he an overrated talking head without any substance?
Can homeless people really 'make a quick transition in2 society' or do they have lingering bad habits like 'eating food out of the garbage' and 'drugs'?
Should we establish charities that raise 'hits' instead of 'raising money'?
Can I perform 'public service' by 'watching feel-good stories on the internet' instead of doing manual labor where I am interfacing with people in need?
Is internet virality the 'solution' 2 end homelessness?
Did this story 'improve' ur day and 'give u hope' or does it 'piss u off' that this bro got to 'piss away his life' and then get more opportunities than u likely ever will?

Next time I see a homeless man, I'm going to ask him if he has any talents, and attempt to make him 'go viral' as the last shot he has 2 change his life.

Avril Lavigne shows off her 'bangin bikini bod' @ the beach [via trying 2 ride slutwaves]

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 08:49 AM PST

Avril Lavigne was seen at the beach, and it looks like she is doing some sort of 'beach cop' internship. Maybe that is just a 'sweet, ironic bro lid', though. I am guessing she is trying 2 become a beach cop bc her career is 'in the shitter' ever since she tried to hard to 'rebel against society' and stopped writing hit songs like "Life is s00 ComPliCaTeD" and "sk8r bois fingerbanging me in the mall parking lot and doing sweet ollies."

Sorta wish I could be in Ariel Lavpink's life rite now. Chill out with her, help her to reinvent herself as a 'Beach House ripoff band' or something. Go 2 the beach, ride chillwaves with her.

Do u think Avril looks mad keut?

Seems like she has a 'keut streak of pink' in her hair. In addition she is sporting the 'school shooting camouflage backpack.' Must be trying hard 2 prove that she doesn't fit in2 society.

Should I get a 'FUCK' tattoo to 'piss my parents off'?

She is apparently 'dating' some character from The Hills named Brody Jenner/letting him 'have his way with her tiny lil alt body.' Wonder if he is 'Mr. Right' or just 'Mr. Right Now.'

Does Avril look hella good?
Can Avril 'come back' as a relevant female wave musician, or will she just 'ride slutwaves'?
Is Avril's career 'over'?
What's ur fave Avril song?
Is Brody Jenner 'hot' or is he just 'the ultimate LA broski d-bag'?

Jimmy Fallon is on the Rolling Stone cover 2 try to be buzzworthy

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 08:16 AM PST

Just saw that Jimmy Fallon is on the cover of the popular rock n roll magazine Rolling Stone. I'm not sure what his goal is. There seem to be some really 'intense' late night wars going on right now for "who can produce the funniest content that no1 watches at night, but goes viral the next day on the internet." Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon keep booking indie buzzbands like 40 blog years after they are even relevant, but indie buzzbands are like 'we'll take what we can get 4 mainstream acceptance and recognition.'

Feels like Jimmy Fallon is just 'playing catch-up' behind Conan, who has already been featured on 2 Rolling Stones covers.

Really wonder who still watches 'Late Night Talk Shows.' Wonder who reads magazines. Really feel 'doomed' abt both of these forms of media.

Who is the most alt host: Conan or Fallon?
Has Jimmy Fallon's show 'been a success' or are all late night shows 'disappointments' + 'a waste of resources' 4 networks?
Is NBC 'going down the shitter'? Does SNL 'blow'?
Is any1 still 'tuned in' 2 talk shows during the final 'musical guest' segment?
Who will be the first late night talk show 2 book Ariel Pink?
(This will settle the final question as 2 who has the most alt authentic buzzworthy late night talk show that cares abt appealing 2 the indiesphere.)

Life Beyond the Rave: What is a raver's life like when they aren't raving?

Hi. We're in a serious relationship where we are not just dedicated to one another, but also the act of 'raving.' We are always on the lookout for a great new DJ, electro house mp3, or regional rave that we can drive 2. In addition, we spend a lot of time networking with a lot of other underground ravers, eventually looking to plan our own event. Unfortunately, it has become more difficult to plan a rave in a public park in the greater Los Angeles area.

The truth is, we're just like any mainstream couple. We eat most meals at Taco Bell. We enjoy going 'thrifting' at used toy stores, looking to find the child_wave accessory to put our personal brands over the top at the next rave. If you know a great place to find low-priced toys, backpacks, and other places where we can hide drugs, let us know.

Recently we adopted this African American baby. I know what ur thinking, "That's not a real baby." But the truth is, our rave-and-go lifestyle doesn't really allow us to take care of any one other than ourselves. Not even small pets. When you're off the grid for 5 days after ODing + suffering from rowdy dehydration--let's just say u shouldn't own a real baby unless ur interested in committing murder.

I'd say most ravers are misunderstood. They think we don't value life, and we just want to escape every chance we get at festivals that celebrate deviant electronic sounds and man-made drugs. While we do enjoy those things, we also take time to appreciate the simple things.

We like to shop for beanies and Indian_wave fleeces.
We do like to go to the desert and do peyote.
We enjoy getting piercings in kewl places.
We love Kool-Aid--not just for drinking, but also for colouring our hair.
We're always down to sit in the back of any van, have a great conversation, and take as many unknown pills as possible.

I know u wouldn't believe it, but we're just like you when we're not at raves.

The RaveWave lifestyle isn't just about 'Rave or Die.'
We believe that we have the option to 'Rave and Live.'

Are ravers 'valuable members of society' or do they just 'do tons of drugs', burden our emergency response healthcare services, and steal toys from children in need?
Do u ever see ravers doing 'normal ppl thing' and say 2 urself "Why don't yall just go to a rave and stop ruining the real world?"
Should all ravers be shipped 2 Australia so they can just live 'the party lifestyle' 24/7 in metaphorical exile?
Is it weird 2 see ppl who are 'way alt' in a normal context?

Parents of a raver are suing Los Angeles 4 letting a rave kill their daughter

Last year in Los Angeles, there was a huge rave called the Electric Daisy Carnival that took place at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. A 15-year old girl named Sasha Rodriguez overdosed and died [link]. It seems like her parents are now suing Los Angeles/the Colesium Commission because they didn't ban underaged teenagers from entering the event and doing drugs.

The parents of 15-year-old Sasha Rodriguez, who died of an ecstasy overdose after attending a rave, have filed a claim against the management of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The parents are seeking $5 million in damages from the Coliseum Commission.

The claim, filed Dec. 23 with both the city and county of Los Angeles, is a necessary step before suing in court. The claim says the commission, a joint state, city and county board, did not fulfill its "duties and was negligent in creating and/or allowing others to create a dangerous condition of public property" during the two-day Electric Daisy Carnival rave at the Coliseum in June.

You might remember Sasha Rodriguez's mother from this local news video about raves where she talks abt having 2 take her daughter off life support.

Do u think it is 'right' for the family 2 sue for damages, or was it partially the parents' fault for letting their teenager go 2 a drug-fueled rave?

Do u think $5 million is 'fair'?
Should ravers be forced 2 sign 'waivers' that acknowledge that they are entering into a drug zone where 'anything can happen?
Did yall go to the Electric Daisy Carnival? Did it seem like a death trap?

The Electric Daisy Carnival rave, which drew 185,000 people over two days, resulted in 120 people being taken to local hospitals, mostly for drug intoxication. Coliseum managers said there were no major problems at subsequent raves Aug. 21 and Oct. 23, which attracted 6,000 and 22,000 people, respectively. A New Year's Eve rave, Together as One, at the Sports Arena resulted in 25 arrests and 17 hospitalizations.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE 4 THE DEATH OF SASHA RODRIGUEZ?

Should raves be held at public places 4 the sake of safety?
Would u rather go 2 a rave at a sports facility or in some 'field' in the middle of no where?
Whose responsibility is it 2 make sure teens don't use drugs?
Should public schools start some sort of 'Drug Abuse Resistance Education' program 2 save kids from doing drugs, just 2 'say no'?
Should Barry Obama 'ban' raves across the USA?
Are raves a natural extension of the human experience?
