HIPSTER RUNOFF

HIPSTER RUNOFF

Has ‘Christian Rock’ hijacked the generic ‘indie aesthetic’?

Posted: 06 Sep 2010 02:38 PM PDT

It seems like Christians are searching for media that is ‘modern + edgy’ but focuses on an eternal love for God and/or the Lord Savior Jesus Christ. It feels amazing 2 be an American, because modern Christian worship can exist in many formats, just as long as ur ‘down with God.’ It’s so difficult for the Lord to ‘break in2 teen + tween markets’ because The Bible in paperback book format just isn’t really fun. Seems sweet that modern musical aesthetics have been adapted and re-imagined to hype up how ‘effing Sweet’ God bro is.

I wanna soar with u… God bro

Feel pumped about the indie-fication of Christian music. Really think ‘wannabe alt’ teens who live in Middle America might really ‘vibe out hard’ 2 alt-looking 20somethings who are dedicated to ‘cute clothes’ and ‘loving Jesus.’

Are Christians ‘alt’?
Is believing in God in 2k10 sorta like ‘LIKING a band/brand on facebook’?
Can God remain relevant in the tweenosphere in the years to come?
Should Obama start ‘taxing the fuck’ out of the church?
Should HRO evolve into a Christian Rock Blog?

I remember when Christian Rock was ‘edgy’ in Xtian circles, because it was like HARD ROCK ‘reimagined’, giving u the opportunity to love the Lord with vibes that tapped into teen/tween angst. I feel like ‘hardness’ is no longer a popular aesthetic, so all of these ‘rocking for god’ bands are dead.

Would LinkedIn Park be ‘more successful’ if they sang about Christian themes?

I wanna soar with u… riding waves of Holy Water

Just think Christian Rock should get ‘less hard’, and maybe start using more twinky indie singers + lofi recording techniques + toy instruments.

It seems like Christians might be trying to ‘utilize technology’, not just to stay connected to their church youth groups, but also to ‘create gimmicky internet memes’ that prove God is chill with technology. Might start an iPhone instrument app band.

Is Christian media ‘original’, or do they just steal everything and add ‘We love Jesus’ vibes?
Should I start an indie band and make a video that looks like a GAP commercial to appeal to early 2000s alt vibes?
Does ur local church offer sermon podcasts so u can vibe out on the Go?
Should my youth group start a facebook page?
Does God like ‘indie music’ more than ‘hard rock’ music?
Is Christian music ‘bullshit’?
Do u think God h8s technology, or did he invent it [via putting Steve Jobs on Earth as the 13th Disciple]?
Is the 2k0 indie aesthetic ‘super gay’/entry level?
Are alt Christian trends 5-10 years behind relevant trends?
What is your favourite Christian band?
Do u prefer it when buzzbands write songs about the Lord, or relationships/weed/the beach/riding chillwaves?
Will there ever be an ‘animal collective’ of Christian rock, or does Christian Rock have to be easy-to-consume content because Middle Americans won’t be able to ‘get’ textural wave concept indie?

I wanna soar with u… catching ur inspirational vibes…

What is a good name 4 a Christian indie band, adapting the name a pre-existing indie band?

Some Magazine puts Michael Cera on the cover, doesn’t realize that Scott Pilgrim tanked

Feel like I will use ‘any excuse’ to re-meme ‘what a huge flop’ Scott Pilgrim Vs The World was [link]. Seems to have been one of the biggest box office flops of all time, losing the studio ‘mad cash.’ U have to assume that Michael Cera’s career is ‘swirling down the pooper’ and that no studio will allow him to carry a movie ever again.

Never heard of Empire Magazine, but they probably just put the stars of any teen movie on the cover, since teens are the only ppl who ‘still buy magazines’ because it reaffirms their interests. Twilight, Harry Potter, Glee, High School Musical, Justin Bieber, Hannah Cyrus, etc. Sorta just trying to tap in2 tweens thinking the Jonas Brothers are ‘legit’ 4 being on the cover of Rolling Stone, elevating the JoBros to ‘pure rock star status.’ Not sure why the decided to put Michael Cera on the cover of the magazine. Seems like a ‘disaster.’

Worried about their September issue sales. Worried that this magazine isn’t going to sell any copies, and it will be forced to ‘shut down.’ Worried that Michael Cera is sorta like ‘media poison’ and if u link ur brand to him, ur magazine/movie/website will tank. Feel like it was a huge risk 2 post this.

Sorta want to watch the trailer again, and think about why it was ‘such a huge flop’?

Do yall still h8 Michael Cera?
Do u still think Scott Pilgrim will ‘turn around’ and ‘catch on’ with the mainstream?
Will Scott Pilgrim ‘flop’ via DVD sales?
Should Michael Cera be ‘blacklisted’ from Hollywood?
Did alt tweens ‘let down’ Michael Cera by not buying enough tickets to his movie?
Do u hope that all magazines die soon?

Some shitty band ‘rips off’ Panda Bear’s “Bros”, writes shitty beach rock song

Trying to utilize social media, shazam, ping, last.fm, pandora’s box of mp3s, and hypemachines to figure out what kind of music I will like without having to do tons of legwork. Feels good to live in this modern era. I have been listening to the hit Panda Bear song “Bros” a lot, so they recommended this sweet band to me called the Custom Kings. Wonder if they will become a ‘highly bloggable buzzband.’

Do u think this song sounds ‘eerily similar’ to Panda Bear’s hit conceptual wave anthem “BROS”? Did they ‘ripoff’ BROS?

R u pissed at the Custom Kings for ‘ripping off’ Pandy?
Should Panda Bear sue them for ‘everything that they are worth’/at least try to legally confiscate their amps?
Who seems more chill: The Custom Kings or AnCoBros?
Do u wish u could be in a local band that filmed their new video with an HD Camera?
Did Panda Bear ‘peak’ with BROS?
Did Panda Bear ‘rip off’ The Tornadoes – Red Roses and a sky of blue?

So confused about sampling/intellectual property… Might go to law school and specialize in chillwave/indie sampling rights.

They seem like chill bros. Not sure why they had to rip off Panda Bro. Maybe Panda ripped some1 else off [via chillwave sampling].

So confused. Not sure which song belongs 2 who?
Did Panda Bear ‘rip off’ “Bros” from Brian Wilson?
Are both songs just generic chord structures, vocal deliveries?
Does music/’sound’ belong 2 any1?
Did Panda Bear ‘ripoff’ the Beach Boys?
Is Panda Bear’s next album going 2 be a dronewave tank job?
Will Panda Bear ‘chart’ in the Billboard Top 10?
