HIPSTER RUNOFF

HIPSTER RUNOFF

Napoleon Dynamite Cartoon Show coming to FOX. Will it ‘flop’?

Posted: 18 May 2010 04:21 PM PDT

Napoleon Dynamite is a popular comedy from the year 2004. It featured a borderline retarded high school student who became friends with a Mexican bro, then helped him become the first latino President of the United States of America [via the "Vote for Pedro Campaign"]. Because of the ’sympathy’ you felt for the ‘mentally and socially challenged’ in this picture, it was branded as a comedy,

Fox is developing an animated series based on the 2004 movie “Napoleon Dynamite,” the network confirmed.

Napoleon Much of the original cast is on board for the TV version, including Jon Heder and Efran Ramirez, along with filmmakers Jared and Jerusha Hess. Clearly if Fox greenlights the project, it will be destined for its Sunday lineup.

It seems like there is a whole new market for ‘adults who never grew up’ so they still watch cutting edge cartoons on the Cartoon Network, South Park, Family Guy, and maybe even the Simpsons Family of Yellow Ppl.

Was Nappy Dynamite even ‘that’ funny, or just quirky, hollow bullshit for mainstreamers trying to be alt?
Wonder if Nappy Dynamite will be ’successful’ as a cartoon, or if they should have it preserved as a ‘cult indie comedy classic’?
Will the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon ruin their ‘brand’ or will it just end up selling more Vote for Pedro tshirts at Hot Topic?
If u went to HS with Nappy D, would u vote for Pedro, or would you make sure every1 elected was white?
Did Pedro’s election in the film ‘open the door’ for the real life election of fellow minority Barrack Obama?

Do u feel like this is a lifeline for ‘Efran Ramirez’ since he probably couldn’t get any work besides ‘playing a Mexi who talked like a stereotypical Chicano’?
Does n e 1 know what type of special needs Napoleon Dynamite had?
Are people who were ‘way into Nappy Dyny’ losers who ‘didn’t understand comedy’?
Does n e 1 know what kind of people still watch cartoons? Kids?

Do tweens just watch the Disney channel and MTV now?
Are cartoons just for adults who ‘never grew up’ and are sort of sad people with pseudo-jobs, but not a ‘real career’? [via the 17-38 year old bros who work at your local Game Stop/Costco/Wal Mart and either live with their parents or in some sad apartment complex and eat microwavable food]
Do u wish u could go back in time to when u were one of the first people to see Napoleon Dynamite in ‘limited release’?
What’s ur fave Nappy Dynamite quote?

Former 1990s alt rock buzzband The Verve Pipe headlines ACL Music Festival

Posted: 18 May 2010 10:12 AM PDT

It seems like music festivals are ‘getting ironically retro.’ As opposed to booking huge bands to be the major draws, they are booking ‘ironic 1990s one-hit-wonders’ to take the stage. The band had one hit called “The Freshmen” which was a popular alt rock song, back in the alt rock 1990s era.

Not sure why Austin City Limits booked them. Seems like a questionable decision, like no1 will show up to their stage, or maybe people will ‘walk by and not know who they are.’ Then they will hear the song “The Freshmen” and possibly start laughing, or maybe they will vibe out hard and yearn for the pre-indie era.

Is the Freshman one of the best indie rock songs ever written?
Is this song the #1 buzz ballad of all time?
Will ‘recover’ from their commercial free fall and get tons of coverage with this festival slot?

From the official ACL blurb:

Verve Pipe's hit "The Freshmen" was part of a wave of pop-rock that swept over modern rock radio in the mid-'90s, washing grunge down the drainpipe of history. But to everything, turn, turn, turn, there is a season, and the Michigan quintet, led by Brian Vander Ark, suffered from diminishing returns; 2001's Underneath failed to chart, despite critical acclaim and production from Fountains of Wayne frontman Adam Schlesinger. Brian's brother Brad left the band, and for the next seven years the band shared time with Brian's solo career. In 2009, the now-six-member Verve Pipe came back as few could have predicted with A Family Album, an LP of original children's songs with an adorable cranky kitty on the cover. With a new rock album in the works as well, the band splits tours between bar shows and family events.

Damn. Just googled their new children’s album and streamed some of it. It was ‘mad terrible.’ [link]

h8 u cranky cat bro.

Is ACL an authentic music festival, or do u prefer Coachella / Pitchfork / Lollapalooza / Bonnyroos / Sasquatch / etc?

Feel like they are trying to market the festival to Austin based ‘cool dads’ who would pay top dollar to see The Eagles. Not sure if 20somethings have expendable income since they don’t usually have jobs, so it is probably better for them to go after young kids and old adults who are ‘loaded’ but still want to be ‘free spirited’ and ‘young at heart.’ Worried that my dad might ruin the buzzbands that I discovered 3-5 years ago.

Who is the #1 ACL act?
MGMT? M.I.A.? The Strokes? The XX? The LCDS? Vampy Weeks? Beach Haus? Muse? Phish? The She & Him? Michael Jackson?

Is Austin City Limits ‘authentic’ or is it the music festival that is aimed at ‘rich Texan 40 year olds’?

Worried that the Eagles headliner means that ACL is no longer oriented at my cutting edge demographic… Hope we can all get jobs, then have more money 2 spend.

Will ‘recapture the magic’?
Should other festivals take chances on other forgotten alt rock bands like LEN, LIT, Eagle Eye Cherry, Crazy Town and Marcy Playground?
Will u go 2 ACL?
Should we all just ‘disconnect from the internet’, do a bunch of hard drugs, and overdose in our rooms as we cry out that ‘we were only metaphorically Freshmen’?

Justin Bieber gets tattoo in order to ‘break free’ from his tween image.

Posted: 18 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Justin Bieber is a popular tween heart throb + singer. He is attempting to ‘break free’ from his image as a white tween singer, so he decided to get a tattoo. Sorta like when Justin Timberlake left NSYNC, then he had to get tattoos, shave off his lil curly fro, and start ‘banging bitches.’ Not sure if this is gonna be a ‘good idea’ for Justin Bieber’s brand. Feel like parents will think he is a bad influence now, or maybe he will encourage tons

There are ‘mixed reports’ on what tattoo he actually received, but listed below are plausible

a) picture of a Pissing Calvin on the Jonas Brothers logo
b) something with ‘the n-word.’
c) the word ‘tween’
d) the word ‘tween’ in Comic sans
e) ‘eff my parents’
f) ‘i luv 2 cum’
g) Disney = Ghey
h) ‘I want my MTV’
i) ‘More Relevant than God’
j) ‘@ me on Twitter’
k) ‘Trending Topic Legend’
l) ‘hard peen in ur vajena’
m) ‘Baby, Baby, Baby’
n) a tattoo of pubic hair
o) a tattoo of a ruler on his inner thigh to measure his penis growth
p) the next Corey Haim
q) the next Justin Timberlake
r) the next Macaulay Culkin
s) some sort of bramble tattoo
t) an iPhone tattoo
u) picture of his first born child
v) picture of a Grammy
w) some sort of ‘cryptic tattoo’ symbolizing the fact that his parents are forcing him to ’stay in show biz’ to make their family bank.
x) the next Corey Feldman
y) the next Dakota Fanning
z) the next Brooke Shields
aa) Choose Ur Own Response

Feel ‘pissed’ that my daughter got an underboob tattoo just to be like Miley Cyrus. She still had a flat chest, so hopefully a ‘boob’ emerges so that she can be more like Miley.

Is Justin Bieber’s tattoo bad 4 society?
Should parents ‘boycott’ his albums?
Is Justin Bieber gonna have ‘a really bad adult life’ when he is no longer internet/real life famous?
Will Justin Bieber be able to enjoy the internet when he is no longer the most popular meme on it, and is just an ‘ironic retro meme’?

New York Times ‘pans’ new LCD Soundsystem album

Posted: 18 May 2010 06:40 AM PDT

I am not sure if any1 listens to the New York Times when it comes to music reviews, but it seems like they ‘took issue’ with the new LCD Soundsystem album. Feel like even though James Murphy has alternative tenure from most websites, they decided to ‘pan his shit album.’ I am not sure why the NY Times did this since it is a local paper, and they should probably just support local musicians.  Maybe u get ‘more hits’ for saying something ‘blows’ as opposed to praising it.

What was ur least fave part of LCD Soundsystem’s This is Happening?

This music sounds fantastic, as usual — clean, tight and separated in the mix — but songwriting inspiration is in short supply. The aah-aah vocal chorus in the first track, "Dance Yrself Clean," is not amazing enough to bring back again for the last one, "Home."

Worried that they are ‘taking down an indie legend.’ Wonder if they believe that LCD Soundsystem should be part of the process, where we collectively ’strip away’ the credibility of formerly authentic buzzbands.  I feel like LCD Soundsystem probably have another 2 more albums/flops before can be seriously discussed.

It seems like they called James Murphy a ‘totally shitty song writer’, like he sort of just poo poo-ed on the microphone for the whole album:

A lot of the words in and of themselves on "This Is Happening" — yowled, crooned or muttered as if he's making them up on the fly — aren't very good, except to engage you with the music. You wonder how he could share lyrics so half-baked. And paying that bit of attention brings you into the momentum and the particulars, a dry snare drum curiously low in the mix, overmodulated vocals, and extra elements brought up loudly: synth percussion, high-hat cymbals, conga drums.

But you can't ignore those words, and the more they come to feel like branding, the more irritating they can be. Mr. Murphy specializes in circuitous or fake deep-thoughts — "complicated people never do what you tell them to" — or a kind of dopey metalanguage : "from this position, I can see both of them/from this position, I totally get how the decision was reached." Sometimes he writes reveries that start strong but peter out, as if he wanted to rewrite David Bowie's "Heroes" but suddenly found something better to do

is LCD Soundsystem ’still relevant’?
Did this album ‘disappoint’ u as a consumer/music fan?
Is there is a ‘backlash’ forming against LCD Soundsystem?
Will their next album be received in the same way that MGMT’s album was received if they don’t ‘write songs like the old 1s’?
Does James Murphy need to go to songwriting classes?
Is the New York Times more influential than Pitchfork?
Will LCD Soundsystem’s new album end up being the #1 album in America?

Pitchfork ‘pans’ new Band of Horses album, band responds by purchasing site takeover ads

Posted: 18 May 2010 06:02 AM PDT

Pitchfork Media is one of the leading music criticism sites on the internet, with their reviews ‘making or breaking’ the careers of many buzzbands. Band of Horses is a band that used to be kinda respected, but now I think they are sorta inconsequential within the modern format of the indiesphere. When a band is ‘no longer useful’ to the indiesphere, it is no longer necessary to ‘cover’ the band and praise it for its products. It seems like when a band becomes ‘too major label’ there isn’t really a reason to ‘praise’

Pitchfork ‘panned’ their new album with a 5.3, which is basically like a 1.0 in a non-2k10 year. It seems like the band / their label / their marketing firm still decided to buy ‘tons of ad space’ on their blogsite, letting consumers know that even if the new Band of Horsebros album is ‘mediocre’, it doesn’t meant u shouldn’t buy it via iTunes.

Wonder if the album is ‘good’ or ‘mediocre’… Never really listened to that type of forgettable indie rock. Sorta always got the vibe that 1 day it would be mad irrelevant, so I never made the commitment to ‘cream’ over them, because when you have to ‘euthanize a band’ it is pretty sad. It’s like ur telling them that they aren’t good enough any more.

Feel like I gotta ‘give mad props’ to P4k for this one. Seems like ‘the ultimate heist’ to be in a position where you get to ‘pan’ an album, but still have so much credibility that the record label/band still ‘needs to purchase tons of ads on ur site.’ Just want my weblog to be that ‘powerful’/influential.

Do u think it was a ‘good move’ for the band to purchase ads on a site that basically euthanized them?
Do banner ads convince u to buy stuff, or do u make impulse buys based on editorial recommendations from popular/authentic websites?
Do u think this ad buy was made by an ‘out of touch’ major label, or was it an ‘eff u’ to the site for giving the band a lukewarm review?
Should the Band of Horses Marketing department have purchased a 10.0 from Pitchfork instead of a ‘traditional campaign’?
Do u know of any other old buzzbands that the blogosphere should euthanize so we don’t have to ‘keep pretending that their mp3s are still relevant’?
Is Buzzband Euthanasia the only way to save 2k10 and distance ourselves from our generic indie rock roots?
Did Pitchfork miss the ultimate buzzband euthanization with MGMT’s Congratulations?

HRO Quiz Meme: Stock symbol OR sillie HIPSTER RUNOFF jargon?

Posted: 17 May 2010 08:38 PM PDT

Editor’s note: Writeup written from the year 2024.
Some bro with a tumblr made a fun lil that asked users to guess if certain words/combinations of letters were official stock symbols, or zany HipsterRunoffisms. HIPSTER RUNOFF is a now irrelevant weblog from the early 1990s which used many different zany words and phrases to build their brand. At first, many readers ‘loved’ these phrases, then the blog became an ‘old and repetitive’ cycle of memes.

The is a ‘throwback meme’, celebrating the fallen blog, which completely sank after the implosion of the chillwave genre when the blogger Carles made a series of off-base predictions about the indie music scene.

Are these terms stock symbols, zany HRO branded words, or BOTH?

: (Answers below)

1. goog
2. bro
3. alt
4. amappy
5. rlly
6. mee
7. blg
8. azn
9. kno
10. authentic nipple slip
11. dre
12. aapl
13. rlly
14. anco

What’s ur fave/least fave HIPSTERRUNOFFism?
Do u know any alt stock symbols?
Have u ever made money in the stock market?
When will HIPSTER RUNOFF die?
Have u lost tons of money in the stock market?
