Name that Alternative Celebrity LookAlike is a fun gimmick game where u see a picture of a normal alternative person who looks kinda like a famous alternative buzz artist or musician. Can u guess who this old lady kinda looks like?
The iPad DJ [link] is one of the most controversial DJs in the history of DJ history, since she clearly ‘has no skills’ but is just trying to ‘ride a technological gimmick’ to get blog coverage. She basically uses iPad apps to make generic bleepy bloopy music, and calls herself a DJ. Not even sure what the deal is. Basically a ton of tech blogs are ‘covering her’ because she is probably ‘a hot girl’ according to tech bros, plus it is a decent iPad meme that can get some blog hits.
Do u think her latest ‘mixtape’ sounds like a complete disaster?
Do u think this is ‘one of the greatest mixtapes of all time’? Is she really gonna ‘crossover’ to new markets + new fans by having a release called a ‘mix tape’?
‘DJing with iPads is so easy that I can do it without any shoes on.’
Are ‘gimmicky DJs’ giving real DJs a bad reputation, or does she prove that DJing is not a real skill? Do u think she is gonna go on tour for Justice? Is the iPad DJ the MGMT of DJs? Should women ‘only be allowed to use technology/the internet’ to look up recipes and print out grocery coupons?
I remember when the ALT REPORT used to have a ‘thick wave’ of Joanna Newsom coverage. Her album was really hyped & respected, plus she was marketed as a post-Zooey Deschanel hot alt celeb who had a unique talent. Wonder if people are still into her, or if she has ‘faded into irrelevancy.’ Wonder if she will ‘actually try to cross over’ next album or if she will make another 2 hour snoozefest that has no commercial appeal to the post-Feist marketplace.
Does n e 1 know what Jools Holland is? Is the the British Jimmy Fallon / Conan O’Brien / Jay Leno / Craig Ferguson? Still don’t really ‘get’ British television + music. Seems like they are into weird stuff, like Susan Boyle, the Kings of Leon, and The Office.
Miss u JoJo. U seem so alone. Plz cheer up. Maybe u can rebound. Maybe not. Not gonna make any promises that the bloggiasphere can’t keep. Will Joanna Newsom’s career ‘rebound’ from 2k10? Will this album even ‘crack the top 20′ of 2k10’s Best Albums Ever of the Year Lists? Is Joanna Newsome ‘just fine’? Is Joanna Newsom the female version of MGMT? Do u miss Joanna Newsom, or do u prefer Zooey Deschanel coverage?
I can’t even remember how many blog years ago Jersey Shore came out on MTV, but it was apparently a ‘cultural phenomenon’, making the cast some of the most important 21st century figures in the history of the 21st century. Never before have a cast of friends meant so much to the nation since the television show Friends. I guess all of these people were ‘weirdo freaks’ that Middle America could laugh at on a consistent basis, so now they get every1’s attention. Seems like they are ‘notorious’ but maybe not marketable. Do u think it was a good idea for Baskin Robbins to choose Jersey Shore cast member DJ Pauly D as the face of their latest marketing campaign?
Not sure if DJ Pauly D was a good hire. I feel like ‘The Situation’ and ‘Snooki’ probably have the best brands, but maybe DJ Pauly D was cheaper than those two. Feels like a weird person to hire, especially so far removed from Jersey Shore buzz, but maybe he was a good value for their target market. Wonder if any1 from the show ‘16 and pregnant’ could be the Baskin Robbins brand ambassador, since they probably ‘crave’ ice cream in their 16 year old bellies.
Is Baskin Robbins having trouble competing with the expanding frozen yogurt industry? Do they have to become one of those brands that is absurd / tries to be as unhealthy as possible to inspire fat people to stay with their brand? (kinda like Burger King) Is 31 flavors enough in our modern society where we could try a million online/at boutique home made organic ice cream shops? Is Jersey Shore ‘relevant’? Is DJ Pauly D a ‘real DJ’ or just a ‘filthy guido who plays techno and pumps his fist’? Do u ‘get’ Jersey Shore fever, or is is mainstream & contrived?
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti played a live song at Viva Radio, and it was sort of ‘boring’ but also might have been ‘interesting’ in a silly way. I think the bottom line is that this video isn’t really that good / bloggable, but since there is ‘a ton of Ariel Pink hype’ in 2k10.5, this is blog content that ‘has to make the rounds’ since we all have 2 pretend that we haven’t heard the leak yet, and go thru the whole ‘formality’ of pretending like we are building up towards the official release of Before Today.
Do u think this version of ‘Round and Round’ is more authentic than the produced mp3 version? wtf is ‘lofi’?
I think this is supposed to be a radio interview, but they sort of just ‘dilly dally’ on the keyboards + Ariel Pink does a boombox, then the song ends, and Ariel Pink gets made at the interviewer when he has to tell them that he isn’t a solo artist any more, he is part of a full band. Is Ariel Pink’s “Before Today” going to earn a 9.5 or above from Pitchfork? Will it be a commercial success? Is Ariel Pink going to place higher than the recent LCD Soundsystem album? Is Ariel Pink guaranteed to top Crystal Castles? Are all of the members of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti ‘perma-fried’? Is Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti the band that MGMT wants to be? What genre does Ariel Pink belong in?
Some artist / photographer made a ‘think piece’ art project that attempts to demonstrate the fact that American Apparel company branding experts are ‘misleading consumers’ by trying to make it seem like their models are ‘every day women.’ I feel like it worked. Basically, the artist had her disabled friend pose in fake advertisements that were supposed to mirror ‘legitimate’ Am Appy campaigns.
Does this send a message? Do u think she looks the same as most Am Appy models?
Official Project Description:
‘American Able’ intends to, through spoof, reveal the ways in which women with disabilities are invisibilized in advertising and mass media. I chose American Apparel not just for their notable style, but also for their claims that many of their models are just 'every day' women who are employees, friends and fans of the company. However, these women fit particular body types. Their campaigns are highly sexualized and feature women who are generally thin, and who appear to be able-bodied. Women with disabilities go unrepresented, not only in American Apparel advertising, but also in most of popular culture. Rarely, if ever, are women with disabilities portrayed in anything other than an asexual manner, for 'disabled' bodies are largely perceived as 'undesirable.' In a society where sexuality is created and performed over and over within popular culture, the invisibility of women with disabilities in many ways denies them the right to sexuality, particularly within a public context.
Too often, the pervasive influence of imagery in mass media goes unexamined, consumed en masse by the public. However, this imagery has real, oppressive effects on people who are continuously 'othered' by society. The model, Jes Sachse, and I intend to reveal these stories by placing her in a position where women with disabilities are typically excluded.
This work is part of a group exhibit for CONTACT 2010 and will be showing on over 270 digital screens in 50 Toronto Transit Commission stations on May 6, 11, 22 and 31.
Do u think American Apparel models are supposed to ‘look a certain way’ or is every1 free to be an Am Appy model? Is this ’shocking’? Do you think you would buy from American Apparel if they had disabled / less-attractive models? What makes a model ‘attractive’?
Is being alternative an ‘equal opportunity’ subculture? Do u discriminate against race, religion, mental + physical disabilities + other random ass criteria? Sorta feel threatened by this, like my world has been turned upside down, now I have to question my reality where I just ‘followed my erect peen’ towards truth. Maybe there’s more to life/humans than sexual attraction + marketing.
Do u think this was a ‘legit project’ or is it just a well-executed meme that taps into the Am Appy zeitgeist? Should American Apparel offer the disabled model a contract, just to generate blog buzz? If brands don’t have ‘hot models’ showcasing their clothes, will the brands be irrelevant? Will handicapped / disabled people ever have the same rights as normal humans? Are ‘alt models’ the new ‘mainstream models’? Is the ‘hipster porn’ strategy the best way to reach alt markets? Did this ‘progressive art project’ send a message, or was it the same as any sort of low level American Apparel criticism / mockery meme that involves poorly utilized Helvetica + sexy model humor? Would this have been more relevant 2 years ago? Should every1 be equal, or is that an unreasonable expectation, and we all sorta just need 2 accept our faults/natural selection and moveo n?
Some blogger in San Fransisco made a ‘visually delightful’ image / meme about how certain bros evolve from hipster to hippie. I am not sure if I really ‘endorse’ this meme, since it seems pretty simple, but I figured I should ‘get in on the traffic’ it is probably going to generate some ‘hipster bashing’ hits as mainstreamers ’share’ this image, and ‘lol’ about bros who they know who grew scruffy beards to try to be post-hipster personal brands.
I went to the website that was linked, and it seemed like some person who was trying to ‘find social meaning’ but it was difficult cuz ’so many ppl were so hollow’ or something.
R u a ‘hipster’ or a ‘hippie’? Do u like people who ’share hipster links’? Do u like to ‘laugh at effing hipsters’? Is there anything to laugh at in this meme, like some sort of whimsical truth that we can acknowledge and laugh about? Is this a high level design meme, or some low level Adobe Illustrator vector graphics? Could there have been more numbers / statistics involved to make this an official infographic? Do bros in San Francisco ‘get all confused’ about what their brand is about? Do all ‘hipsters’ devolve to ‘hippies’ or are they just ‘the rich kids who don’t have to get real jobs’? Does n e 1 who generates ‘hipster commentary’ memes deserve an automatic book deal?
