The XX makes new ‘MTV-friendly’ video for the mp3 “Islands”

The XX has a new video for “Islands” that I think they debuted at MTV-U, the MTV station for college kids who like bro rock, rap, and indie. It seems like they are just ‘trying to crossover’ and leave their indie roots behind. I feel like they ‘made the leap’ and can no longer make videos that are kinda crappy/conceptual in an indie buzzband kind of way. Everything has to be ‘professionally done.’ Seems like they just did some White Stripes zooms and some mainstream dancing stuff.

They were probably just told to make a generic indie video, and hope it gets some radio play / MTV play / record sales bumps. Gotta wait until the focus groups tell them that American consumers want to hear more girl voice / more duet / more bro voice.

The overall goal of the video was probably to ‘brand’ the X symbol in a similar manner to Justice’s branding of the Cross.

Sounds kinda like they cut out some of the male vocals to make it seem more like ‘a girl’s band.’ Maybe that is more marketable, but can’t really confirm that they even altered the song. Might have just been the video.

Will The XX crossover?
Is the XX’s next album going to be a success because they will ‘follow the right formula’ and just perpetuate the same sound to widen their audience?

Should the XX make a new batch of mp3s for their early adopter audiences?
