HIPSTER RUNOFF

HIPSTER RUNOFF

MGMT apologizes for how bad their first single is, makes zany viral video

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 11:47 AM PDT

After the complete disaster when they released the song “Flash Delirium”, has gone on record as ‘being sorry’ about how terrible the song was.

“When we first wrote that song, we were laughing so hard,” ’s Ben Goldwasser tells Spinner. “Andrew [VanWyngarden] just reminded me of that — that we thought it was the funniest thing we’d ever heard. And then we got used to it, it started to sound more normal. It’s not a single, but we thought it was a good way to entice people to listen to the whole record. I’m sure there are plenty of people who think it’s completely weird and not what they were expecting. I’m sorry.”

Wonder if they are authentically ’sorry’ or if they are just bullshitting bc of ‘pressure from their label.’ Maybe their major label record company Sony/Columbia was ‘totally let down’ by the blog and twitter response to the song, and frantically made them issue a public apology, letting consumers know that this song is supposed to be the ‘outlier’ of their album. Worried they are micromanaging to achieve critical acceptance.

Is ‘pissing away’ their opportunity because they are too free-spirited and don’t value consumerism enough to take their position as a well-monetized mainstream indie band seriously?

In addition, claims that they ‘do not fit in with this world/society.’

“We’re trying to come to grips with that world,” he admits. “It’s not our world. We don’t feel comfortable in it. But we didn’t want to make that typical second album either, about fame. So we’re definitely observing it, as opposed to revelling in it.”

The band bros recently made a zany viral video to prove that they don’t fit in with this world.

Is marketing around some sort of drug brand a good way to reach tweens + the mainstream?
Is ‘letting every1 down’?
Who is responsible for the failure of ? Their record label? Their creative vision?
Will sell records if they don’t release authentic pop songs?
Is ’s “Congratulations” destined to flop?

Bloc Party lead singer officially ‘comes out’ to BUTT Magazine

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 11:24 AM PDT

BUTT Magazine is a popular magazine within the homosexual alt community. Lead singer of Bloc Party, Kele Okereke, recently ‘came out’ to BUTT. This means he is officially confirmed as a homosexual.  Even though sexual preference is a personal / heredity outcome, when ur kinda famous, people put ‘heat on u’ to be honest /represent ‘the movement.’

I feel ‘relieved’ that he came out after reading about the clash of his upbringing vs. ‘being his true self’:

"My parents are super-Catholic and they come from a culture in Nigeria where there weren't any visible gay people who were out and were happy.

“My parents are getting older and I didn't like the idea that they could possibly die without knowing something that is a big part of my life. It's not easy. But I know that they love me and I love them."

"This interview is actually an important step in my relationship with my parents. The reason I'm doing it is whenever I go out, I'm always stopped by young, gay kids who say it's really refreshing and encouraging to see someone like me being out in a relatively mainstream band.

“If I'd have had someone saying it's okay to be you when I was a teenager, I'd probably be a very different person. That is why I'm doing this now, after years of not doing it. It's good to show that gays come in all shapes and sizes."

The BUTT Magazine feature also features nude pictures of Kele’s butt in the shower. He ‘tells all’ about some of his sexual exploits.  Probably stories about crazy hot alt twinks all across the world. Because of this soft porn / edgy content, alt gays are allegedly really into BUTT Mag.

Is ‘coming out’ a healthy experience?
Should all gay alt celebs be required to come out, or will it make us listen 2 their music differently?
Is this the most ‘high profile’ coming out of an alt celeb since Rostam Batmanglij / Edward Droste, or should he have given the [exclusive] to the Advocate?
Have yall ever pleasured urself to BUTT Magazine, or just the American Apparel’s best bottom contest?

Are media outlets abusing the word ‘Hipster’ in headlines 2 get hits?

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 09:55 AM PDT

In the linked article, the writer bro discusses how the word ‘hipster’ doesn’t really mean anything, but can be used as an interesting / generalized term 4 ‘young people.’ From what I understand, putting ‘hipster’ in a blog subject or newspaper headline can make a story 30-50% more interesting. As opposed to saying ‘young ppl’, ‘hipster’ provides a more compelling angle.

Why? Because media outlets have learned that anything with the word “hipster” in it is a pretty great ingredient in the murky dark potion-making of , or search engine optimization, as evidenced by the rising number of search queries above. Long story short, news outlets (present company included) figured out over the last year or two that using words in headlines that people are more likely to search is better for their business than a great headline without those magical words. And one of those magical words is “hipsters.”

The article uses Google Trends to demonstrate that people searching 4 ‘hipster’ is at an all time high. This is probably tweens learning how to use bing to find out about new trends.

Is n e 1 under the age of 30 a ‘hipster’?

Do yall like reading articles about ‘hipsters’?
Do yall like reading blogs about ‘hipsters’?
Do meme blogs abuse the term ‘hipster’?
R u a hipstar?
Is the mainstream media / large blog outlets abusing the term ‘hipster’?
Will tweens evolve into ‘hipsters’ or will they get their own genre of human?
