Alt Photographer (The Cobrasnake) gets gig at tween birthday party

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 05:38 PM PST

Los Angeles based photographer “The Cobrasnake”, also known by his human name Mark Hunter, recently photographed / culturally documented a tween’s birthday party, then published photos to his public website. It seems like this tween has parents who are well-connected to the arts, nightlife, and/or culture global scene. Many children hope for a Wii or a PSP for their birthday, but very few have parents who have the financial backing or awareness to book a high priced alt photographer brand to have a presence at their birthday party.

‘Mark is the best at photography and organizing fun, low cost party games.’

They only want u when ur seventween.

‘Fireworks’ [via Animal Collective]

Wish my parents understood ’space’ enough to get me an elevated bunk bed, and painted my walls with chalk paint so I could doodle whenever I wanted and cultivate an affinity for the arts —> design skewl.

Wish my parents loaded my room with post-ironic anti-African American antiques. Wish I had my own sambo.

Happy Birthday.  Love, Mom, Dad, and the Alt Report Robot

Is hiring the cobrasnake to photograph your party the modern equivalent of ‘hiring a clown’ for your child’s party/buying a large moon bounce?

What sort of entertainment + photography services do yall use for your alt kids’ birthday parties?
Do u wish u had Alternative Parents?
What was the best alt birthday gift u ever received?

Vintage Indie Band INTERPOL will tour with U2

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 03:39 PM PST

You might remember Interpol as one of the first highly critically acclaimed indie bands that was absorbed into ‘the mainstream machine’, then never made another album that meant as much to as many people as their debut album Turn on the Bright Lights.  Can’t believe they are ‘opening up’ for more than a decade after they are relevant.  This seems like a ‘huge error’ or perhaps Interpol is looking to ’squash’ all of the other ‘indie’ releases this year with ’sick crazy’ album sales.

Interpol seems to be a divisive band/idea in the mp3 blogosphere.  Popular music website Pitchfork Media went ‘on record’ as calling their 2007 album Our Love To Admire a ’shit sandwich’ in a recent blurb. In 2007, P4k gave this record a 6.0, even before the inflated rankings of the chillwave era.

has built a massive ‘claw’ under which the band performs on tour. This stage setup is meant to fill huge football stadiums, generate mad sales, and theoretically offer the fan a unique concert-going experience.

It seems to be a ‘larger than life’ experience meant to change the lives’ of mainstreamers having a meaningful time. Probably people who go to a concert once every 10 years. One concert can attract more fans than an indie band could attract on their entire 20 date tour.

We cannot confirm that Interpol is still relevant. We cannot confirm that their new album will be ‘worth covering’/blogging about.

In addition, will bring The Fray and Lenny Kravitz on tour on their mega stage.
Do u think Bono listens 2 interpol?
Was this union brought about by high powered PR agents?
Does Bono need to listen 2 more blog rock + chill wave + ternative?

Is Caribou’s “Odessa” the first authentic mp3 of 2k10?

[MP3]
Caribou Odessa

has been ‘the worst mp3 recession’ in the history of the mp3 blogosphere. We are still recovering from the end of the indie era, back when so much ‘low level shit’ was presented to us, and we were encouraged to ‘eat it up’ since the modern mp3 blogosphere has an ‘excess supply’ of mp3s, and blog readers have an ‘excess demand’ for coverage.  There are simply not enough bloggable tracks/bands and a high demand for content. This makes the current model favorable for crappy + mediocre bands.

has been ‘all about’ watching mainstream indie band heavy weights battle it out for the largest meme / commercial show cases. Sorta miss the era when ‘cherry picking’ mp3s was still satisfying, back in the glory days of the hype machine.

From what I have read on Wikipedia, Caribou has ‘been around’ since the year 2000. This MP3 of “Odessa” has been in the open market for 1 month.  I think that I enjoy the song “Odessa” and will possibly let it ‘define’ Q1 of for me. It possibly reminds me of a better / more conceptual version of Yacht, possibly a post-DFA product or something. Maybe this song is ‘post-disco’, enabling the listener to have a fun, dark time. Not sure if this entire album is ‘good’ or if they are the type of band who creates a unified album that sounds the same.

Does n e 1 know if Caribou is ‘authentic’?
Has a ‘good, new’ band launched in ?
Will we just explore older bands that never got excessively hyped in the past 3 years?
Do yall miss the glory days of mp3 hunting?
When will the ternative era come 2 save us?

Feel so ‘guarded’/hesitant when it comes to new mp3s / bands /brands. Afraid of commitment.

RollingStone.com ‘goes under’, replaced by websquatting home page

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 10:57 AM PST

Music Magazines continue to ‘die off’ because of the rise of Pitchfork, Hype Machine, streaming websites and the mp3 blogosphere. There is no budget left to pay ‘music writers’ who believe they still have an authentic skill.

RollingStone.com is the popular website of the magazine Rolling Stone. It seems like their site has ‘gone under’ and was replaced by a generic web hosting home page.  This might mean the ‘death’ of one of the most authentic magazines in the history of the pre-internet music landscape.

We can only assume that RollingStone.com makes the same amount of money per year as an entry level mp3 blog.  Other theories have an member of the IT staff making a huge mistake that will cost him his job. Extreme conspiracy theorists say that Pitchfork IT staff ‘hacked’ the rolling stone site in order to steal some of their readers.

Have yall ever read the magazine ROLLING STONE or has it just been idealized as some sort of source of authenticity via the ‘Almost Famous’ glorification of music journalism?

Just trying 2 sell magazines to poors, tweens, and blacks.

Has 1 of your fave websites ever crashed / been hacked?
Are music magazines officially dead?

Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste Donates Childhood guitar to charity. Will GB be cursed?

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 09:52 AM PST

You might remember as one of the ‘major players’ in the Great Indie War of 2k9, the Battle for the #1 Album on the Pitchfork + Billboard Charts. It seems that the lead singer / ‘front man’ Edward Droste gave away his guitar for the sake of helping people in Haiti.  It seems like the guitar will be auctioned for money, as opposed to donating it to a Haitian family to jam on.  While this might be for a good cause, insiders can’t help but speculate that this guitar was spiritually linked to the strength and success of . By giving away this guitar, insiders imagine a scenario where the band is ‘cursed’ and their status as a relevant band fades away, losing their massive fan base and authentic credibility.

Ed's parents gave him the guitar on his 15th birthday. It's not only the guitar he learned to play on but was also the primary guitar used on Sorry for the Delay, Horn of Plenty and Yellow House, played by both Ed and Daniel Rossen.

Will members of the band Animal Collective purchase the guitar and put some sort of curse on it in order to derail ?
Should have ‘manned up’ and donated a Volkswagen instead?
Will be able to survive the loss of this guitar?
Will be able to ‘top’ Veckatimest without this guitar?
Will some alt bro purchase this guitar and use it as a ‘cum rag’?

Travis Barker moves past death of DJ AM, starts ‘band’ with DJ A-Trak

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 09:24 AM PST

Travis Barker, reality star and popular drummer from the popular band Blink 182, was recently in a plane crash which killed several of his friends. DJ AM survived, but then overdosed on drugs. DJ AM and Travis Barker were in a band together where DJ AM spun mainstream hits on his turn tables, and Travis Barker emotionally drummed over the music.

Even though DJ AM died, Travis Barker is still interested in ‘making mad bank’ from the DJ economy. His projects most likely get ‘mad booking fees’ which enable his rocker lifestyle. In order to move forward, he hired the popular DJ A-Trak to ‘make sweet jams’ with him.

Do they seem like a chill duo?

The duo will perform versions of each other's remixes (they've reworked tracks for everyone from Eminem and Soulja Boy Tell'em to MSTRKRFT and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), plus new material they've been working on in Barker's Los Angeles studio. Or, at least, that's the plan right now.

In 2004, before Kanye was a human meme ball, A-Trak was hired as his tour DJ. A-Trak seems to have had ‘mainstream exposure’ in the past. Do yall think Blink 182 will sign to Fool’s Gold Records, A-Trak’s Record Label?

Do yall support Travis Barker for ‘moving on’?

Do yall support the demographic of mainstreamers and bros who ‘eat up’ Travis Barker drumming over some generic DJ mix?
Is Travis Barker an overrated drummer/artist with an excellent monetization scheme?
Is A-Trak alt?
Will their new album ‘top’ Pitchfork’s charts in 2k11?
