HIPSTER RUNOFF

Is Die Antwoord a ternative band?

Posted: 09 Feb 2010 01:40 PM PST

Last week, a new viral sensation ‘hit the internet.’ It is some rap group from South Africa, and no1 was able to tell whether or not they were ‘real.’ Does n e 1 know what the deal with Die Antwoord is? Not sure if they are ternative, post-TheStreets/eminem indie rap, or just some meme that was packaged by a high priced marketing firm who paid a huge tastemaker to blog about them.

Watched some rap video that was supposed to be a ‘raw profile’ of them. Only really feel confused. Not in a way that makes me want to ’share the video in my facebook feed and say that it is awesome’, but in a way that makes me wish I had never seen it.  Wish these South African bros had never entered my realm of relevant awareness.  It seems like they got more coverage than the buzziest buzz band in the history of the world.

It seems like a zany meme that would be shared by people who say the word ‘interwebs.’ Can’t believe the mid/early-00s design aesthetic is already ‘retro-ironic.’

Feel sorta confused by Die Antwoord. I wonder if they will be the type of band that ‘opens up for Kanye West/Radiohead’, or if they will be more like the band Aqua who sang the hit song “Barbie Girl.”

I was scared by the bro with progeria in this video, but maybe the progeria personal brand will catch on in the 2k10s.

I feel like the most captivating part of Die Antwoord is probably the broad with the progressive bangs. She is like a progressive sexual figure. Some 1 who you want to have conceptual sex with.

Hopefully Feist / Zooey Deschanel and other ‘indie broads’ cut their bangs into a progressive post-Tegan and Sara style.

Seems like it might all just be a joke, and Ali G is going to ’sue the fuck out of them.’  Maybe they will transition into some sort of Flight of the Conchords type of act and get a ‘brilliant’ HBO comedy show that showcases the lasting effects of apartheid on South Africa in a funny/insightful way.

Is there really a mass market for this type of ‘rap’ act?
Is South Africa the new Brooklyn?
Is this viral marketing for World Cup 2k10?

Is it even ‘worth it’ to ’search 4 answers’ about Die Antwoord, or should we just let another meme cycle wash them away?
WTF is ternative?
What is marketing?
Should I get some progressive bangs?

Is Die Antwoord the alternative replication of Eiffel 65’s “Blue”?

Or more like Aqua’s “Barbie Girl”?

Lil Wayne ‘parties’ b4 he gets shipped 2 jail

Lil Wayne is going to jail for doing something that black people/ do. I am not sure if it has to do with guns, theft, drugs, or tax evasion, but he had some sort of ’sweet ass party’ before he is shipped away.

I feel happy for him, since he got to enjoy the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl victory with a group of his closest bros.

I wonder if his network of enablers/childhood friends who he ‘employs’ are worried that they will have to ‘get a real job’ until he is released.

Seems like they had buffet style weed + cough syrup + top shelf alcohol that has been branded to African Americans. Wonder if he had a ’sick orgy’ before getting shipped to jail.

‘I wish I could fuck every girl in the world.’ -Lil Wayne, 2009

Does Lil Wayne seem like a chill bro?
What would u do the night be4 u got ur ass shipped 2 jail?
Is hiphop culture bad 4 America?
Do get a sweet ‘album sales bounce’ after they get out of jail?
Will Lil Wayne die within the next 5-10 years?
Do u remember that time Lil Wayne was ‘critically acclaimed’ and ‘deep’?
Do you wish Lil Wayne ‘acted more white’ like Jay-Z/Kanye?

The White Stripes plan to sue the Air Force/US Govt 4 stealing their song

Posted: 09 Feb 2010 09:03 AM PST

Popular mainstream rock band sometimes marketed as indie the had a ’shitty version’ of their song “Fell in Love With A Girl” ripped off and utilized in a Super Bowl commercial by the Air Force, a popular branch of the US military which uses jets to bomb Arab and terrorist hideouts.  The were not given ‘mad bank’ for the usage of their song [via commercial licensing].

It seems like they also got ‘mad pissed’ because they stole their song to promote the recruitment of dumb, minority soldiers to fight in a war that they don’t support. I remember back when George W. Bush was in office, it was good for artists to speak up against the government, but this is a risky move since they are theoretically ‘not supporting Obama.’

I wonder if this will hurt the ’ brand in the long run with mainstream markets. Even though their ‘classic rock’ sound appeals to the masses in Middle America, they might gain an anti-American brand. Theoretically, the band should be more patriotic, and lend their song to the campaign for free. I feel like I would rather have the US military branches ‘market themselves’ to the masses, as opposed to having some sort of mandatory draft.

Do u think the should sue ’soccer’ for stealing the riff from their hit song “Seven Nation Army”? [via crowd chants]

When your song is ’stolen’/’sampled’, should you be proud that it was good/relevant?
By not supporting the Air Force marketing campaign, are they helping the terrorists?
Should we support Obama’s withdrawal plan?
Do the wear red because they are ‘commies’?

Will their next album be mad boycotted/blacklisted by the US govt?
WWTAFD: What Would The Arcade Fire Do?
Will the US Air Force lose 40% of their enlistment by indie music fans?

In an effort to share good music, solid opinions, and take down pitchfork media dot org, some bro began to vlog about relevant alternative music. The vlog bro has branded himself as ‘the internet’s busiest music nerd.’

In the selected clips from his youtube channel, he reviews several different chill wave tracks and albums.
