Best haiku ever

Posted: 25 Jun 2008 07:21 AM CDT

I received an email advertising 826LA's summer writing courses for kids. It includes this haiku by Anthony Vasquez, age 6:
Wolf

Wolves like to AH-OOOOOH
They like to eat people and
Play guitar softly

The summer courses sound great. For example:
Write Your Own Detective Series

Students ages 8 to 11 will collectively create one adventurous main character and then write their own detective mystery stories for the series. At the end of 4 weeks, we'll have a detective series filled with all those important mystery elements: clues, plot twists, and more! If you've got a closetful of red herrings to share, please, do tell and sign up to help.

Former Steeler Terry Bradshaw admits to using steroids

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 10:44 PM CDT

Details here. Via.

I actually assume the vast majority of players use steroids - - otherwise it just doesn't make sense that more players aren't begging for the most thorough testing around. If you were making less money because some guy was cheating, would you tolerate it? I also think athletes should be permitted to use whatever steroids they want to use. But what disgusts me is reading news articles credibly reporting that some 22-year-old (or older) put on 25 pounds of muscle and got faster in just a few months of exercise.

Researchers say they've dated Odysseus' slaughter of his wife's suitors upon his return from the Trojan War

They say it happened on on April 16, 1178 BC. Go here to read about their analysis. An impressively specific date since there's no proof it ever happened.

Woman emails photos of herself in bikini to ESPN's Rich Eisen (and his wife)

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 10:19 PM CDT

This is actually a month old, but new to me so:
Suzy Shuster, a sideline reporter for ABC's college football broadcasts, hit the roof when she discovered seven e-mails and several bikini photos sent by Lane - who works for CBS affiliate WKYW-TV and is recently divorced - to an account she and her husband, Eisen, share. That had Shuster firing off to Lane a scathing letter, a copy of which was obtained by Page Six.

A seething Shuster wrote: "Boy, do you look amazing in a bikini . . . congrats! Whatever you're doing, (Pilates? yoga?) keep doing it - it's working for you. Anyway, sorry but those seven e-mails you sent to my husband, Rich, well, oops, they came to the e-mail address we both use from time to time, but no worries, I'll forward the beach shots as well as the ones of you dancing with your friends on to his main address. Do you have it?"

Read the rest of the email here and see updates on the story here.

Totoro Forest Project

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 10:00 PM CDT

Charles Vess explains:
Pixar art director, Dice Tsutsumi has asked a group of artists to "paint their own personal Totoros". Over a hundred artists, mostly from the animation field have responded. A exhibition of some 60 of these pieces will be held at the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum this fall. A handsome art book will follow.

Apparently there will be a dedicated website. Follow the links to see contributions from Charles Vess, Lorelay Bove, and Nate Wragg.

Spider-Man learns about child molestation

Posted: 24 Jun 2008 09:43 PM CDT

See more scans from this very special issue of Spider-Man and Power Pack here. Accidentally buying stuff like this as a kid really freaked me out. I innocently bought an issue of the Incredible Hulk (I think this was about the time of Secret Wars II), and it turned out to be all about Banner being abused as a child. That one gave me nightmares.
