Funny line by Dana Milbank about the Tim Russert coverage

Posted: 21 Jun 2008 11:58 AM CDT

Washington, D.C.: Please Dana, enough Tim Russert! Does "official Washington" realize that half of Iowa is underwater and more than one person has suffered and died in that awful mess? We have the worst natural disaster in years in the Midwest, and yet our "news" 24-7 is about a journalist who -- while maybe a beloved figure in Washington power circles -- remains unknown to most of the world.

Dana Milbank: There's flooding in Iowa?

All I know about recent meteorological events is there was a terrific rainbow over Washington after the Russert memorial.

Tentacled penis monsters by James Jean

Just one element of some arresting posters Jean created for AIDES, a European HIV/AIDS NGO. I try to keep this blog PG-13, so I'm just going to recommend you visit his site. Once there, click on the thumbnails for high-res images.

(If you're not afraid of having nightmares about tentacled penis monsters.)

They're called marbled stingrays, and the story's not a joke, far as I can tell. Via.

Here's video of the courtship rituals of marbled stingrays:

Amaze your friends with odd trivia about Superman's name

Posted: 20 Jun 2008 10:29 PM CDT

Superman's Earth name, Clark, consists of Cl (Chlorine), Ar (Argon) and K (Potassium), the three elements that are directly above Krypton in the periodic table. (Well, K's a bit off to the side.) Just an odd coincidence - - Jerry Siegel used Clark Gable for Clark and Kent Taylor for Kent. More comic book urban legends verified and dispelled here.

Digikyoe - a fusion of classic and modern Japanese imagery

Posted: 20 Jun 2008 09:37 PM CDT

Reader Jeff Mitchell brought his artwork to my attention. He calls his illustrations "Digikyoe":
Digikyoe is an adaptation of "Ukyoe, meaning "floating world," which refers to the impetuous young culture that bloomed in the urban centers of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto. It is also an ironic allusion to the homophonic term for "Sorrowful World," the earthly plane of death and rebirth from which Buddhists sought release."

Go visit his site to see more striking, creepy images. I particularly like the animated ones, which I have excerpted below.
